Word Wednesday .::129

Word Wednesday is posted every Wednesday. Each week I post a scripture that I've read that week that has spoken to me in a fresh way. I believe that if we read God's Word every day, He will give us at least one scripture every week that will impact us. Sharing Scripture with each other is like iron sharpening iron. Leave a comment and share a scripture that has impacted you this week.

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

Matthew 23:1-10 The Message

1-3 Now Jesus turned to address his disciples, along with the crowd that had gathered with them. "The religion scholars and Pharisees are competent teachers in God's Law. You won't go wrong in following their teachings on Moses. But be careful about following them. They talk a good line, but they don't live it. They don't take it into their hearts and live it out in their behavior. It's all spit-and-polish veneer.

4-7"Instead of giving you God's Law as food and drink by which you can banquet on God, they package it in bundles of rules, loading you down like pack animals. They seem to take pleasure in watching you stagger under these loads, and wouldn't think of lifting a finger to help. Their lives are perpetual fashion shows, embroidered prayer shawls one day and flowery prayers the next. They love to sit at the head table at church dinners, basking in the most prominent positions, preening in the radiance of public flattery, receiving honorary degrees, and getting called 'Doctor' and 'Reverend.'

8-10"Don't let people do that to you, put you on a pedestal like that. You all have a single Teacher, and you are all classmates. Don't set people up as experts over your life, letting them tell you what to do. Save that authority for God; let him tell you what to do. No one else should carry the title of 'Father'; you have only one Father, and he's in heaven. And don't let people maneuver you into taking charge of them. There is only one Life-Leader for you and them—Christ.

"Don't let people do that to you..." - That phrase really sticks out to me in this passage. We have a responsibility to have no other god but God. We also have a responsibility to not become gods to others. First, don't believe your own hype. You're a fool if you do. Secondly, we have a responsibility to redirect people and point to the one, true God that deserves their praise and admiration.

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

Matthew 15:10-11 The Message

10-11He then called the crowd together and said, "Listen, and take this to heart. It's not what you swallow that pollutes your life, but what you vomit up."

This is a hugely important teaching of Jesus. Legalism tells us that holiness comes from simply abiding by the rules and law. This is a very incomplete view. Jesus made us see that it's not a head thing, it's a heart thing. If you have great doctrine....great, but it's not what you know, it's who you know. A relationship with God in the power of the Spirit, and through Jesus is what it's about. Just because you don't drink, smoke, do drugs, or look at pornography doesn't mean your heart is right. You can be a "good person" and have a heart that has strayed from God. Eventually, you'll find out when you vomit it up.

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

Matthew 8:1-4 The Message

1-2 Jesus came down the mountain with the cheers of the crowd still ringing in his ears. Then a leper appeared and went to his knees before Jesus, praying, "Master, if you want to, you can heal my body."
3-4Jesus reached out and touched him, saying, "I want to. Be clean." Then and there, all signs of the leprosy were gone. Jesus said, "Don't talk about this all over town. Just quietly present your healed body to the priest, along with the appropriate expressions of thanks to God. Your cleansed and grateful life, not your words, will bear witness to what I have done."

It's more knowledge, doctrine, & words...it's living it.

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

Zechariah 7:4-6 The Message

4-6God-of-the-Angel-Armies gave me this Message for them, for all the people and for the priests: "When you held days of fasting every fifth and seventh month all these seventy years, were you doing it for me? And when you held feasts, was that for me? Hardly. You're interested in religion, I'm interested in people.

God knows the heart, and that's what He's after. He loves people and wants our worship. That's a pretty amazing thing that we need to fall on our knees about.
