Word Wednesday .::88

Word Wednesday is posted every Wednesday. Each week I post a scripture that I've read that week that has spoken to me in a fresh way. I believe that if we read God's Word every day, He will give us at least one scripture every week that will impact us. Sharing Scripture with each other is like iron sharpening iron. Leave a comment and share a scripture that has impacted you this week.

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

I Chronicles 22:7-10 The Message

7-10 David said to Solomon, "I wanted in the worst way to build a sanctuary to honor my God. But God prevented me, saying, 'You've killed too many people, fought too many wars. You are not the one to honor me by building a sanctuary—you've been responsible for too much killing, too much bloodshed. But you are going to have a son and he will be a quiet and peaceful man, and I will calm his enemies down on all sides. His very name will speak peace—that is, Solomon, which means Peace—and I'll give peace and rest under his rule. He will be the one to build a sanctuary in my honor. He'll be my royal adopted son and I'll be his father; and I'll make sure that the authority of his kingdom over Israel lasts forever.'

I love this passage, because it gives some background to Solomon, and maybe why he ultimately valued wisdom. David gave very wise counsel to him. This is the first time I noticed the distinction between David of wars and Solomon of peace. Cool stuff.

Kingdom EP is on Itunes!

My new album, Kingdom EP is on Itunes, as of today.

I'm more excited about this album than my previous ones, because I see at as such a tool I can share for God's kingdom. There are six songs on the album. Everyone of the songs are ones that my church and other churches have really grabbed in worship. My prayer is that it will be a resource for worship for the listener and for worship leaders. I'm very passionate about the local church, and everyone of these songs are easy and accessible to use in church.

Simply put, this album is a resource for the Church.

The album consists of three brand new recordings:
-Radiance
-My Peace
-May Your Kingdom Come

It also has three previous recordings that have been remastered:
-Alleluia (Our Praise is)
-Holy Reign
-Beautiful Scene

I've also put all the chord charts on my website, garydurbin.com, for free download.

This is a strictly digital download album, so Click here to get it on Itunes today!

Music Monday 16

This is a post that you can participate in on every Monday. Everyone likes music, and there are obviously many tastes in music. This is here to see what different types of music are filling everyone's lives. Chime in!

We're on vacation this week! The only annoying thing about vacation is surviving the drive time with a 2 yr. old (God love her) with no attention span. Music can definitely help in the car. So...

What is your favorite traveling song(s)?

Right now, the family song for the car seems to be either "Oh Happiness" by David Crowder Band or "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas.

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

II Kings 17:13-15 The Message

13 God had taken a stand against Israel and Judah, speaking clearly through countless holy prophets and seers time and time again, "Turn away from your evil way of life. Do what I tell you and have been telling you in The Revelation I gave your ancestors and of which I've kept reminding you ever since through my servants the prophets."

14-15 But they wouldn't listen. If anything, they were even more bullheaded than their stubborn ancestors, if that's possible. They were contemptuous of his instructions, the solemn and holy covenant he had made with their ancestors, and of his repeated reminders and warnings. They lived a "nothing" life and became "nothings"—just like the pagan peoples all around them. They were well-warned: God said, "Don't!" but they did it anyway.

Pretty bold stuff. If we listen to God and do what He says, He will do something with us...great things. If we turn away from His Word and revelation, we become nothing. We are nothing without God.

Vicky Beeching - Eternity Invades

I can't wait for this album. I really appreciate Vicky as an artist and worship leader. She brings a realness and a humility to all she does. Some artists tend to buy the hype and take themselves too seriously, but Vicky appears pretty grounded in my short encounters with her. Also, this video makes me really want to go back and visit London again. Thoroughly fell in love with that place. Check out this new album, when it releases soon!

What is your favorite U2 song?

I'm gonna go with "I Still Haven't Found what I'm Looking For".

I believe that if we read God's Word every day, He will give us at least one scripture every week that will impact us. Sharing Scripture with each other is like iron sharpening iron. Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

II Kings 9:30-37 The Message

30-31 When Jezebel heard that Jehu had arrived in Jezreel, she made herself up—put on eyeshadow and arranged her hair—and posed seductively at the window. When Jehu came through the city gate, she called down, "So, how are things, 'Zimri,' you dashing king-killer?"

32 Jehu looked up at the window and called, "Is there anybody up there on my side?" Two or three palace eunuchs looked out.

33 He ordered, "Throw her down!" They threw her out the window. Her blood spattered the wall and the horses, and Jehu trampled her under his horse's hooves.

34 Then Jehu went inside and ate his lunch. During lunch he gave orders, "Take care of that damned woman; give her a decent burial—she is, after all, a king's daughter."

35-36 They went out to bury her, but there was nothing left of her but skull, feet, and hands. They came back and told Jehu. He said, "It's God's word, the word spoken by Elijah the Tishbite:
In the field of Jezreel,
dogs will eat Jezebel;

37 The body of Jezebel will be like
dog-droppings on the ground in Jezreel.
Old friends and lovers will say,
'I wonder, is this Jezebel?'"

Yikes. Gruesome stuff here. As you read the story of Jezebel in I Kings, you'll probably think she gets away with her evil ways, but God wasn't kidding about any of the details of her demise.

Everybody has different tastes in music. So...

If you had to pick one music genre to listen to for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I would probably pick Folk/Rock. Rock is definitely my favorite style, but I love the deep writing that folk brings.

Album Review - Pocket Full of Rocks - More Than Noise

The first time I heard a PFOR song, I didn't know it was their's. It was on September 11th, 2001. I bought the Michael W. Smith Worship album, 2 planes destroyed the twin towers in NYC, and amidst all of that I was driving down the road and the song "Let it Rain" rocked my already shaken heart. Since then, PFOR has made a great impact on the CCM world, by bringing the heart of the church and worship to their listeners.
On their third studio album, More Than Noise, I believe we're hearing their best. It certainly doesn't hurt that Ed Cash, who has brought us the works of Chris Tomlin, produced this latest album. The opening track "Alive" is a perfect way to kick it all off, as it expresses a heart for living for God in this life. The song that grabbed me the most was "Come As You Are". The opening line just killed me: "He's not mad at you...". Michael Farren, frontman of the band, told me on twitter, "...crazy that so many people sit in worship services feeling that broken." That should be the news that we shout from our churches. You don't have to be perfect, just come as you are.
"Jesus Died My Soul to Save" is a song that all churches, no matter the style, could implement into their set lists. You can definitely hear the congregation singing this as you listen to it. They also did a huge version of their staple, "Let it Rain". I cannot wait to add this to our set list at my church. It's a very powerful version, and you can tell that the Holy Spirit gets the main songwriting credits on this anthem. Watch this beautiful acoustic version of the song:

I am a big fan of their last album, Manifesto, but I think this easily tops it. This is a quality band, not to mention Michael Farren's powerful vocals, and you will love having this in your car's speakers. Click here to purchase it on itunes.

A special thanks to Word Music and PFOR for the opportunity to do this review.

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

I Kings 19:11-14 The Message

11-12 Then he was told, "Go, stand on the mountain at attention before God. God will pass by."

A hurricane wind ripped through the mountains and shattered the rocks before God, but God wasn't to be found in the wind; after the wind an earthquake, but God wasn't in the earthquake; and after the earthquake fire, but God wasn't in the fire; and after the fire a gentle and quiet whisper.

13-14 When Elijah heard the quiet voice, he muffled his face with his great cloak, went to the mouth of the cave, and stood there. A quiet voice asked, "So Elijah, now tell me, what are you doing here?" Elijah said it again, "I've been working my heart out for God, the God-of-the-Angel-Armies, because the people of Israel have abandoned your covenant, destroyed your places of worship, and murdered your prophets. I'm the only one left, and now they're trying to kill me."

This makes me think of statements that religious leaders have made through time, claiming that acts of nature or terrorist attacks are actually condemnations of God. This has definitely not shown the love of God. This has not helped our world come back to God. Are we looking for God in the hurricanes and earthquakes, when He's simply just whispering to us? We've got to quit asking for the voice of God and start asking for the ears and hearts to listen.

I Exalt Thee

Here's a fresh take on the song. We took it and created a new drum pattern and feel for it. It was real appropriate for our service this past weekend.

"For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods."
Psalms 97:9 kjv

Women in Worship

Here's a great new site for the ladies who lead worship. It's hosted by a great voice in the worship community, Vicky Beeching. I think this is much needed. I'm excited to see more females leading worship, and bringing us into God's presence. Check it out!

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

I Kings 16:1-4 The Message

1-4 The word of God came to Jehu son of Hanani with this message for Baasha: "I took you from nothing—a complete nobody—and set you up as the leader of my people Israel, but you plodded along in the rut of Jeroboam, making my people Israel sin and making me seethe over their sin. And now the consequences—I will burn Baasha and his regime to cinders, the identical fate of Jeroboam son of Nebat. Baasha's people who die in the city will be eaten by scavenger dogs; carrion crows will eat the ones who die in the country."

This is a common problem that still plagues us today. God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things, and we start to think that, in and of ourselves, we are extraordinary. I look at some leaders who have concerned themselves with titles, power, and money, and I think, "What will it take to wake them up?" God simply reminds Baasha, and at times, us that we came from nothing. More specifically, we came from dirt, that God created. When we start letting pride creep into our lives, I think we should all go out, pick up a handful of dirt, and remember where and Who we came from.

What's the best album you've purchased recently?

I just recently downloaded Phil Wickham's new album. He's like worship music meets emo. I dig it. It's an amazing album focusing on eternity. Great stuff.
