Movie Monday LI

This is a post that you can participate in on every Monday. I'm a big fan of the cinema, so I decided to break up the Monday blues by talking about movies.

This is the 51st week of Movie Monday, and next week will the year anniversary and final Movie Monday. I thought we would end the ride with best and worst. So...

What's the worst movie(s) you've ever seen?

This is a tough one, because there are way more bad movies than good movies. I think a good measurement of this is when you can't wait for the movie to end and it seems like it just won't end. The movie "A.I." ranks #1 in this category for me. There was a lot of hype, especially with Speilberg's name on it, but it was a huge let down. I'll never forget when I saw this in the theater. When the movie finally ended and the credits rolled, a guy stood up and yelled "There is a God!" It was pretty rough.

Happy Thanksgiving

When I was in high school, I worked at Subway. I was a Certified Sandwich Artist. One year, they had me work on Thanksgiving. To my amazement, the place was packed during lunch. It made me wonder what everyone does for Thanksgiving. We're in Savannah, GA this year with my parents for Thanksgiving.

Just curious...how do you spend your Thanksgiving?

Word Wednesday .::70

Word Wednesday is posted every Wednesday. Each week I post a scripture that I've read that week that has spoken to me in a fresh way. I believe that if we read God's Word every day, He will give us at least one scripture every week that will impact us. Sharing Scripture with each other is like iron sharpening iron. Leave a comment and share a scripture that has impacted you this week.

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

Deuteronomy 24:5 The Message

5 When a man takes a new wife, he is not to go out with the army or be given any business or work duties. He gets one year off simply to be at home making his wife happy.

IWhat a cool verse. Never noticed this before. God still cares this way about marriage. As I once heard, "Happy wife, happy life".

Movie Monday L

This is a post that you can participate in on every Monday. I'm a big fan of the cinema, so I decided to break up the Monday blues by talking about movies.

Saturday afternoon, I finally watched "Twilight". I've made fun of this so much without seeing it, but I must admit, I really liked it. So, that night, Jennifer and I went and saw "New Moon", which was good, as well. The only thing I made fun of was that, now with werewolves and vampires, it's starting to look like the Monster Mash. All they need is Frankenstein. So...

What's your favorite monster movie?

I'm gonna go with "Young Frankenstein". Still to this day, it's one of my all-time favorite movie. It's hysterical and genius.

Book Review - Once an Arafat Man

Once an Arafat Man by Tass Saada

This past summer, I went to a worship conference and became friends with a worship leader and fellow blogger named Ben. During the week he gave me a copy of this book called, Once an Arafat Man. Turns out the author is his father, Tass Saada. Finally, this past month, I got around to reading the book, and I couldn't put it down.
The book starts with this crazy, intense battle scene in Israel. Tass, a Palestinian and Muslim, grew up being taught to hate Israel and the Jewish people for taking their land when he was a child. This hatred grew, and Tass eventually joined a radical army under the leadership of a new leader named Yasser Arafat.

The book, for me, has 3 sections:
1) Amazing, manly war story of a young, devoted soldier.
2) 1970's chick flick. (Where Tass goes to America and meets his future wife.)
3) Transformation from hate and war to love and peace through Jesus Christ.

The story's are incredible and gripping of how he grew in the ranks of Arafat's army. Starting as a teen radical, then quickly becoming a valued sniper. The stories of his transformation through Christ are equally gripping. In his incredible conversion experience, he explained, "...not everyone's conversion to faith in Jesus Christ is quite so spectacular or dramatic. But a high percentage of Muslims who come to faith in Christ do so because of a vision, dream or other supernatural experience." I personally love how the Holy Spirit is so real and tangible to Tass. Though I haven't met him personally, after reading this book, I can truly see that he is a man of real faith.
Like I said, I couldn't put it down. It's very well written and laid out. This is a book that all kinds of people would enjoy and be inspired by. Click here to purchase it.

Deuteronomy 10:12-13 The Message

12-13 So now Israel, what do you think God expects from you? Just this: Live in his presence in holy reverence, follow the road he sets out for you, love him, serve God, your God, with everything you have in you, obey the commandments and regulations of God that I'm commanding you today—live a good life.

I think we could say we that if did all this every day, we would live a pretty full life. You can see how Moses is really trying to inspire the people in this last book of the law. Great stuff.

New Website Design

I redesigned my web site, garydurbin.com. I'm putting out an EP called "Kingdom" this coming Spring, so it was time to start gearing up for that and refresh the look of the site. It's nothing fancy, especially considering it's coming from me and Dreamweaver, but it's clean and simple. Check it out!

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

Deuteronomy 1:19-26 The Message

19-21 Then we set out from Horeb and headed for the Amorite hill country, going through that huge and frightening wilderness that you've had more than an eyeful of by now—all under the command of God, our God—and finally arrived at Kadesh Barnea. There I told you, "You've made it to the Amorite hill country that God, our God, is giving us. Look, God, your God, has placed this land as a gift before you. Go ahead and take it now. God, the God-of-Your-Fathers, promised it to you. Don't be afraid. Don't lose heart."

22 But then you all came to me and said, "Let's send some men on ahead to scout out the land for us and bring back a report on the best route to take and the kinds of towns we can expect to find."

23-25 That seemed like a good idea to me, so I picked twelve men, one from each tribe. They set out, climbing through the hills. They came to the Eshcol Valley and looked it over. They took samples of the produce of the land and brought them back to us, saying, "It's a good land that God, our God, is giving us!"

26-28 But then you weren't willing to go up. You rebelled against God, your God's plain word.

Interesting passage. I see good and bad in Moses' leadership here. The good side is that he listened to his people and allowed them to give him some advice. It's never bad to listen. But, maybe he listened too much, considering their ultimate outcome. Not sure about this one, it intrigued me.

Movie Monday XLVIII - MOVIE REVIEW "THE GENIUS CLUB"

This is a post that you can participate in on every Monday. I'm a big fan of the cinema, so I decided to break up the Monday blues by talking about movies.

MOVIE REVIEW:
"The Genius Club"

This year I had the privilege to meet several new friends, one of which was a great guy from Cloud Ten Pictures, who have done many Christian films, including the Left Behind movies. He gave this movie called "The Genius Club" and asked me to review it on my blog. So, here goes...

I love movies. I love going to the movies, and I have become somewhat of a critic. I know what I like and what I don't. Unfortunately, I have had zero luck when it comes to really appreciating "Christian" films. The camera work, the sound editing, and the horrendous acting. I say all that, comparing them to mainstream film making. There just has been no comparison as of yet, and I'm assuming that has to do with the difference in budgets. The most important things to me, when it comes to a good movie, is the story and acting. I really could care less about special effects. When you put amazing special effects with a lame story, it's still a lame story.

"The Genius Club" offers a very good story. Like "The Breakfast Club", it takes place in a room with only dialogue. So, I have to give a lot of credit to the writer for keeping me interested for almost two hours. It's an attention-getter from the start. With the threat of a nuclear bomb on American soil, the mad man (Tom Sizemore), compiles a room full of IQ geniuses to "play a game". Their game-play will be the determining factor in the safety of Americans. It was a great storyline.

The other aspect I will give praise to is the camera work and editing. They did a great job bringing emotion to the film just by way of camera work and the use of old historical footage edited throughout the film.

As far as the acting, there was two sides to the coin. On one side, you have a lot of stereotypical Christian film acting, which is very average. My main acting criticism is about the character Jacob, who was the token evangelical of the story. He was a little boring and not the type of character I would portray as the "Christian". You also have Stephen Baldwin, who is like the new Kirk Cameron, which is not always a good thing. But on the other side of the coin, there is Tom Sizemore. To me, he was a man among boys in this film. The guy is, no doubt, an oscar-caliber actor, and I applaud Cloud Ten for snagging him for this film. He really took it to another level and added so much to the dialogue. I really believe he, along with the story line made this film.

I will say that this one of the best, if not best Christian film I've seen. There's some acting and production aspects I had to look past, but I stayed with it and wanted to see how it ends. That's evidence of a great story, and that's vital to a great film. Great job on this, Cloud Ten!

What's the best Christian film you've seen?

Hope you had a Happy Halloween weekend. My wife and I enjoy the occasional scary movie. So...

What's your favorite Halloween movie?

My wife's favorite is this wretched movie called "The Worst Witch". I have no idea why she likes it. Mine would have to be the original "Halloween". Michael Myers is one of the scariest ever. The music is one of the best parts of the movie with that little piano riff. Scary stuff.
