Word Wednesday .::62

Word Wednesday is posted every Wednesday. Each week I post a scripture that I've read that week that has spoken to me in a fresh way. I believe that if we read God's Word every day, He will give us at least one scripture every week that will impact us. Sharing Scripture with each other is like iron sharpening iron. Leave a comment and share a scripture that has impacted you this week.

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

Leviticus 8 The Message

"...just as God had commanded..."

Leviticus 10:1-2 The Message

1-2 That same day Nadab and Abihu, Aaron's sons, took their censers, put hot coals and incense in them, and offered "strange" fire to God—something God had not commanded. Fire blazed out from God and consumed them—they died in God's presence.

In chapter 8 you see the phrase "just as God had commanded" several times. Moses made that a priority, and God blessed the efforts. Then in chapter 10 Aaron's sons messed with some "strange fire" and got burned, because they did something other than God's command. Have you ever instructed someone on how to do something, and they decided to try their own way? Very frustrating, because you're trying to help them succeed. God feels the same way when we divert from the plan He's made. If we're not careful, we'll get burned by our strange fire.

What's your Word?

Twitvid.com

This weekend, I finally checked out Twitvid. It's like Twitpic, but with video. I had just tweeted about toys being all over my living room, then I tweeted a video of it, almost immediately after. The geek in me gets giddy when I use this technology. Gotta love it. Here's my first twitvid:

This is a post that you can participate in on every Monday. I'm a big fan of the cinema, so I decided to break up the Monday blues by talking about movies.

Whenever I'm sick or up at night or stuck in bed, I have a go-to movie. You know, the movie that you can watch again and again, because it's just that good. So...

What's your "go-to" movie(s)?

Mine are The Last Castle and Tombstone...definitely a couple of guy movies.

Songwriting::::ACCURACY

These posts on songwriting are not written from a professional point of view. These are just my thoughts as I experience new aspects of the craft. The best part of these posts will be your input.

When it comes to songwriting, if you’ve been to any workshops or seminars, the topic of accuracy in songwriting is a common one. I heard Tim Hughes say to make sure your lyrics make since. I’m somewhat of a critic when it comes to songs, and I definitely listen for accuracy in songs, especially if they’re pushed to a mass audience.

There’s a couple different aspects to accuracy in songwriting. The first is obvious. That’s Biblical accuracy. When we lead worship, we have to understand the lyrics and melodies that we teach are probably the most memorable aspects of church life. As worship leaders, we really have a much easier task than the speaker, because people love music. Music keeps people’s attention because of the natural dynamics that come with it. I definitely have a very high respect for speakers, especially pastors that speak week after week to a congregation. With that said, the songs that we teach can quickly become somewhat of a doctrine for people, especially those who are not avid Bible readers, which is, unfortunately, the majority of church-goers. Biblical accuracy in worship songs is absolutely crucial. They literally hold the danger of teaching false doctrine, and that’s a responsibility we as songwriters need to hold in high regard. We’re not perfect, and our doctrine is not perfect, but we can do our very best to strive for Biblical accuracy in our songwriting for the church.

The other aspect is not as important, but something to consider. That is grammatical accuracy. Do your lyrics make sense when it comes to grammar? In one of my English classes in Bible college, the teacher was trying to help the "good ol’ preacher boys" understand the importance of good grammar when delivering a sermon. He said, "Would you serve steak on fine china or a paper plate?" Good point. If we want to be excellent in our songwriting, then we can’t ignore grammar. It’s just one more measure in creating great art. One thing that I’ve done is pass my lyrics to an English teacher at a local high school here, and let her critique them. Now, the only exception I’ve found is poetry. Sometimes good grammar is sacrificed for poetic beauty, and I’ve found my peace when it comes to that exception.

At the end of the day, we are creating art, and sometimes you have to color outside the lines, but make sure you strive for Biblical accuracy, first and foremost, and do your best to have your lyrics make sense. If we’re lazy in being accurate, it can come back to bite us.

Exodus 33:15-16 The Message

15-16 Moses said, "If your presence doesn't take the lead here, call this trip off right now. How else will it be known that you're with me in this, with me and your people? Are you traveling with us or not? How else will we know that we're special, I and your people, among all other people on this planet Earth?"

God, help us to find our worth in Your presence, instead of lack there of. This really challenged me this week.

Questions for God

When you meet your Maker, one day, the first thing that will happen is you will be on your knees in worship. But suppose you get a chance to ask some questions. You know...the questions that fuel mysteries that we talk about. If you get that chance, what would you ask God? Here's what I came up with (random order):
  • Is there a Bigfoot?
  • What's the most accurate Bible translation?
  • Who shot JFK?
  • How beautiful was Earth before we trashed it?
  • What's in Area 51?
There's more I would ask, and I'm not sure what I will really ask when the time comes, but these make me curious now. Oh, and I asked my wife what she would ask, and she said, "Why me?"..........nice.

What's your questions for God?

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

Exodus 16:32-33 The Message

32 Moses said, "This is God's command: 'Keep a two-quart jar of it, an omer, for future generations so they can see the bread that I fed you in the wilderness after I brought you out of Egypt.'"

33 Moses told Aaron, "Take a jar and fill it with two quarts of manna. Place it before God, keeping it safe for future generations."

This made me ask myself, "What is my manna?" What has God provided for me and how can I preserve it for future generations? What blessings are evident in my life? It's great to ask yourself these questions.

What's your Word and/or Manna?

Hymnosphere

I've been leading worship in the local church for the last 7 years. I would be categorized as a "contemporary" worship leader, because of my musical style. Taking two churches through style transitions, I've taken my share of hits. I'm so grateful for these experiences, because they've sharpened me and tested my motives. They've made me better. They were a huge part of my development. One of the frequent attacks that came my way was the complaint for not using hymns. What I quickly realized was that when they said "hymn", they were talking more about style. This became clear as I tried inserting more hymns to appease them, and still could not win their approval. In other words, these same people could care less whether I sang the lyrics to "Greensleeves" or "What Child is This?" as long as it sounded, to be blunt, old. This crowd wanted nothing to do with the new. Again, I'm past the bitter stage and well into the thankful stage. Through all of this, God showed me my purpose. I was to teach and train the church in worship through music. I was to help them see past the style and fall at the feet of Jesus. That is my purpose and passion as a worship leader and God has made it clearer everyday through the fruit.
The flip side to this is the progressive crowd that has, in a sense, thrown the hymn book in the trash. They are caught up in their own form of legalism that says, "If it's not new, I won't use it." They want nothing to do with the old songs of the faith. What they're doing is continuing a cycle of legalism, that ironically, they're rebelling against. Meanwhile, churches and worshipers are being deprived of the main thing: WORSHIP.
I love Jack Hayford's definition of a hymn: "A hymn is a song sung to Him." The balance we can find is that God doesn't care about the date of a song. He wants our hearts. As a worship leader, I basically have decided to blur the line that separates the old and the new. I'm looking to bring songs that are Biblical. Songs that will usher the crowd to worship God in Spirit and in Truth. I'm so grateful to finally lead a crowd that isn't thinking "How many hymns are we doing?" As I've said many times over the several years, I want to use inspired songs by inspired Christians from all generations. To throw the hymn book out like yesterday's news is just as bad as being close-minded to the new songs that our springing up today. Remember what it's all about.

What's your thoughts? What's your favorite old hymn and why?

9/11 thoughts

Remembering the most horrific attack on American soil, I had some thoughts. It made me think of the lives that were lost and the families that suffered. It made me think of the unity it created for a short time in our country. It made me think of the full churches that week. Churches full of people that were trying to figure out how to feel about it all.

What comes to your mind today?

1. Eleanor Rigby
2. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
3. Hey Jude
4. Strawberry Fields Forever
5. HELP!

Alright Beatles fans, let's hear your top 5....and go.

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

Exodus 4:10-12 The Message

10 Moses raised another objection to God: "Master, please, I don't talk well. I've never been good with words, neither before nor after you spoke to me. I stutter and stammer."

11-12 God said, "And who do you think made the human mouth? And who makes some mute, some deaf, some sighted, some blind? Isn't it I, God? So, get going. I'll be right there with you—with your mouth! I'll be right there to teach you what to say."

I always love God's responses to us when we're panicked and worried. I know this is not a real profound statement, but God is always cool.

This is a post that you can participate in on every Monday. I'm a big fan of the cinema, so I decided to break up the Monday blues by talking about movies.

The other night, I watched the last 30 minutes of Rambo II on TV. So...

What's your favorite Rambo movie?

Without hesitation, I will say First Blood. Then again, I seem to always like the first ones most of the time. How can you beat John Rambo, with his "hippy" hair, up against the podunk town sheriff? Great flick.

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:

Genesis 40:8 The Message

"They said, "We dreamed dreams and there's no one to interpret them." Joseph said, "Don't interpretations come from God? Tell me the dreams."

It's so important that we show and remind people that God is the source. I've learned to never assume that "giving God all the glory" is not a given with everyone. Joseph understood this very well.
