This is a post that you can participate in on every Monday. I'm a big fan of the cinema, so I decided to break up the Monday blues by talking about movies.
I just got back from Las Vegas. My Dad took my brother and I for a couple of days. It was a blast. I'll have a video blog up sometime this week. So...
What's your favorite Vegas movie? I loved Ocean's 11. Great flick. Gotta love the chemistry of that cast.
Word Wednesday is posted every Wednesday. Each week I post a scripture that I've read that week that has spoken to me in a fresh way. I believe that if we read God's Word every day, He will give us at least one scripture every week that will impact us. Sharing Scripture with each other is like iron sharpening iron. Leave a comment and share a scripture that has impacted you this week.
Here's the scripture that stuck this week:
Genesis 37:2 The Message "This is the story of Jacob. The story continues with Joseph..."
I've never noticed that little statement before. The story of Joseph is really the story of Jacob. If we go deeper, it's all the story of Jesus. It made me really think about the story of God. What an awesome mystery. What's your Word?

Let's talk about trilogies.
What's your favorite trilogy? I know the respected ones are Lord of the Rings & the two Star Wars trilogies, and loved those. But, if I'm gonna pick a trilogy that I really would like to sit and watch right now, I'm gonna say the Bourne trilogy. I know...go easy on me.
Here's a great artist I met at a conference this year, Vicky Beeching. She put a behind the scenes video of her recording experience on her blog. Looking forward to this album. Enjoy the video:

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:
Genesis 31:4-9 The Message 4-9 So Jacob sent word for Rachel and Leah to meet him out in the field where his flocks were. He said, "I notice that your father has changed toward me; he doesn't treat me the same as before. But the God of my father hasn't changed; he's still with me. You know how hard I've worked for your father. Still, your father has cheated me over and over, changing my wages time and again. But God never let him really hurt me. If he said, 'Your wages will consist of speckled animals' the whole flock would start having speckled lambs and kids. And if he said, 'From now on your wages will be streaked animals' the whole flock would have streaked ones. Over and over God used your father's livestock to reward me.
It's amazing what happens when we simply trust God. If we our firm in our faith, we can really see God do incredible things in our life. We'll never see miracles, unless we exercise our faith. What's your Word?
So, recently, I was leading worship at another church in our city. They had Wi-Fi in their worship center and I had my iPod Touch with me. I found that I could not resist the urge to visit my social networks, i.e. twitter, facebook, email, etc. As I sat in my sin of surfing in church, I wondered to myself, "Is it a good idea to have Wi-Fi available in a church service?" Like Paul in Philippians, I found myself in a strait betwixt two. I saw positives and negatives. On the positive side, I see the potential in implementing social media into the church. There are churches who are using Twitter to involve the congregation in on the sermon, which is cool. On the negative side, I see the temptation of the web life seeping in and creating a lack of focus in worship. As a person who is all for the social media world, I found myself wondering if it belonged in this sacred time of corporate worship. Should I not allow this time to be simple and meditative, releasing the focus of technology? I don't know. Help me out. Let's hear it... Why or Why not Wi-Fi?

This was a monumental weekend in the Durbin household. On Saturday, I got to introduce my son to the movie phenomenon we know as Star Wars. We watched Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and he loved it. He actually asked if he could watch it yesterday again. I felt a tear come on. So...
What's your favorite Star Wars flick? I've gotta go with "Return of Jedi". I love all of them, but that one has always stuck out to me. I can't wait to show Josh that one.

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:
Genesis 19:15-17 The Message 15 At break of day, the angels pushed Lot to get going, "Hurry. Get your wife and two daughters out of here before it's too late and you're caught in the punishment of the city."
16-17 Lot was dragging his feet. The men grabbed Lot's arm, and the arms of his wife and daughters—God was so merciful to them!—and dragged them to safety outside the city. When they had them outside, Lot was told, "Now run for your life! Don't look back! Don't stop anywhere on the plain—run for the hills or you'll be swept away."
I could be really hard and judgmental towards Lot here, but that would be hypocritical of me. I can think of times when God has instructed me, but I would drag my feet. It's amazing how much mercy God has on Lot in this story, but it's even more amazing how much mercy God has for me. I know my heart, and God knows it more. What's your Word?

It was sad to hear, yet another legend has died last week. John Hughes really brought a fresh, new style to movies in the 80's and 90's. So...
What's your favorite John Hughes movie? (click here to see the amazing list) It's too hard to say, but I will have to go with Breakfast Club, just because it was all dialogue and pretty much happened in one room the whole time. He has quite an impressive list of straight up, classic movies.
Have you ever picked up a book, knowing nothing about the content or the author, but simply was just intrigued by the title and been completely blessed by it? That's exactly what my experience was with Secondhand Jesus by Glenn Packiam. Glenn is a worship leader at New Life Church in Colorado, which has been in the news in the last couple years, regarding their former pastor. The subtitle to the book is "Trading rumors of God for a firsthand faith." Glenn talked, very transparently, about his pride issues as they became very real in the midst of the shocking scandal involving the former pastor. Instead of being bitter and furious, he became very aware of changes he needed to make in his life, spiritually. He said, "God was my Jerry Maguire, my ambassador of quan, and my prayers were spiritually cloaked versions of asking Him to 'show me the money.'" The book challenges the reader to not accept, what he calls, "rumors" about God. In other words, he is challenging us to make our faith our own. Don't accept what people say. Study for yourself and see and listen to God personally. He said, "Rumors grow in the absence of revelation." Throughout the book he references the story of the Ark of the Covenant and the effects of how people treated and how God responded. He also talks about how "good behavior" is not the definer of our faith. He says, "When we judge 'sinners,' we point at their poor behavior, we do so from a seat of security, confidence, in our own good behavior." He then referenced the man's prayer in Luke 18:11, "God, I thank you that I am not like other men..." One thing I teach to younger adults is that you cannot have your parent's, grandparent's, guardian's, churches, or your pastor's faith. You must have your own faith in God. This a great book that really drives that point home. Don't believe the rumors about God. Seek a revelation from Him.

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:
Genesis 1:1-2 The Message 1-2First this: God created the Heavens and Earth—all you see, all you don't see. Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness. God's Spirit brooded like a bird above the watery abyss.
I just finished the ESV Bible, and so I decided to give the Message a try. I'm loving it. The Old Testament jumps off the page. I was captivated from the first verses. All we see and all we don't see. That wording really got me thinking and praising God. Truly an awesome Creator. What's your Word?

I love to watch a great movie at the theater, so...
What's the best movie experience you've had at the theater? Mine was definitely, opening night for the movie "The Sixth Sense". The theater was packed, and no one knew about the twist. The crowd laughed, cried, screamed, gasped, and as the credits rolled, the place erupted into applause. Perfect movie experience.
