Word Wednesday .::17
Word Wednesday is posted every Wednesday. Each week I post a scripture that I've read that week that has spoken to me in a fresh way. I believe that if we read God's Word every day, He will give us at least one scripture every week that will impact us. Sharing Scripture with each other is like iron sharpening iron.To participate, do your own post on your blog about your Word for the week, and link it to the bottom of my post every week by using the application provided below. Always leave me a comment, so I know you dropped by, and link back to my post from yours. Thanks for participating.
Here's the scripture that stuck this week:
Jeremiah 32:17 ESV
‘Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.
Whenever stress comes in our lives, this should be the antidote. When, not if, problems creep in or explode into our lives, we can either worry or worship. Of course, that's much more easy to say than to actually do. Perspective is the key. When we keep the perspective of who God is, then we will lose sight less and less of what He can do. Nothing is too hard for God.

Hillsong London "Hail to the King" Review
Today, Hillsong London released their new album - Hail to the King. The first thing I noticed when I pushed play is that it is not live. When it comes to Hillsong anything, their best stuff is definitely live albums. The power in the worship of the people is the great unseen force on any live worship album. I definitely missed that in this new studio release, but the quality of their musicality and vocals really shines inspite.The first track, "Now" is an opener that doesn't dissapoint. It's a call for a generation to rise and shine the light of Christ now. The music is infectious, with a great drive, as they sing "Let your voice be heard..."
The next track, "Hail to the King" is a song that has grown on me. It's kind of a throw-back sound to the early 90's. It's very singable and has a great feel to it. The verse and chorus are strong, but I felt that the bridge was average, and the instrumental was possibly a mistake. As the title track, it came off a little weak in the song-writing category.
There were three tracks that grabbed me. The first song that grabbed me was "You Brought Me Home". This is the "coldplay track" of the CD. It's a beautiful ballad with some haunting vocals. The second song that grabbed me was "You are Here (The Same Power)". I believe this is the all around best song on the CD. It's definitely your typical Hillsong tune that fills the place with worship. The first line of the chorus says, "In this place, You are here, By Your mercy, I draw near." Great lyrics with a moving melody.
Here's a video of them doing it live:
The track that moved me the most was "I Receive". To me, this is the greatest contribution to the church off of this album. It is the most accessible song, regarding style and singability. The message of the song is something that you don't hear a lot in worship music. The chorus repeats the line, "I receive Your love", and ends with the words, "I'm accepted". One big, big problem that I see with people in the church is that they don't accept God's grace and mercy in their life. We have to learn to receive God's love and forgiveness, and accept the fact that we are accepted by Him just the way we are.
Overall, you won't be dissapointed in this project, especially as it plays out. It's one of those rare albums that gets better with each track, and it has some very doable songs for your local church.

The Writer's Collection
I just found this on Itunes this morning. They just released a "best of" CD of Paul Baloche. We sing several of his songs at our church along with the rest of the world. You may even love his songs, and not really know much of him. I already have most of these songs, so I won't buy it, but if you don't have his stuff, this would be an awesome addition to your collection. Song after song, it's just packed. Click here to check it out.
Ahhh Yeah
Tonight is the season opener for the Celtics. We're taking on the Cavs. The night is opening up with the boys getting their rings. I would hate to be the Cavs. They're expecting the ceremony to be pretty emotional, as guys like Pierce, Allen, and Garnett have waited so long to get a championship. They should be pretty amped after that. Like I said, I would hate to be the Cavs tonight.This will be a great year for us long-time Celtics fans. They'll actually be televised much, much more. Last year, I had to follow them online most of the time. REPEAT!

Movie Monday
This is a post that you can participate in on every Monday. I'm a big fan of the cinema, so I decided to break up the Monday blues by talking about movies.Let's play "Desert Island". If you could only have one movie to watch the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
I would have to go with.......The Last Castle, because it's always been a go-to for me. Robert Redford is one of the greats, and James Gandolfini is amazing in it. Great flick.
your turn...

Worship Confessional 10.26.08
We had an awesome day today. We took a glimpse at eternity, and we sang one of my least favorite worship songs. Pretty cool, huh?
Here's the set list with Itunes links:
Everlasting God - Brenton Brown
Blessed Assurance - Fanny Crosby
Glorious Day - Todd Agnew
I Can Only Imagine - Mercy Me
Have you ever done something completely out of obedience, that you didn't prefer in a worship service?
This is also a part of Sunday Setlist.

Last night, I finally signed-up on Twitter. I'm a sponge for social media this year. I'd love to go all out and connect my cell phone to this, but I just can't bring myself to pay unlimited texting yet. If you have a twitter, click my link to the left to connect with me on there.Social media is becoming a big part of our world, and has become a huge avenue for communication and even cultivating friendships. I have been talking to people for the last couple years, primarily through my blog, myspace, and facebook. Our church now has a myspace and facebook page, and both have been helpful. I've got friends who are still leery of the social media take-over, and some that are cool with it.
What's your take on social media?

Pumpkins and Pictures
Every year at this time, my wife looks forward to going down to the Methodist church down the road to pick out a pumkin(s) and, more importantly, take some mad pictures. This is Jade's first visit to the pumpkin patch, and she did not cooperate. My wife doesn't ask for much, but she wants her nice family pictures from time to time, especially at the pumpkin patch. Josh is a pro by now. He knows the drill. Jade, for some reason, just wouldn't smile for the camera.

Be Real Intro Video
Our Student Pastor, Warren, asked me to come up with a quick intro video for their big Be Real weekend. I had no ideas, so I just searched Itunes for songs with "be real" in them. I was amazed at the options, and the options is what sparked the idea. This is what I came up with:

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:
Jeremiah 23:23-24 ESV
23 “Am I a God at hand, declares the Lord, and not a God far away?
24 Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord.
I was just talking to a friend yesterday about how God does this in the Bible from time to time. Asking questions seems to be the best diffuser in a debate. In the political season, it seems there's a lot of attempts at proving the other candidate wrong, instead of simply just talking and asking questions in a civilized manner. Instead our political system and parties have lowered themselves to juvenile, school yard bashing, and we have to vote for one of them to be our leader. Very sad. God, on the other hand, doesn't debate with us or look to prove us wrong. He snaps his finger and wakes us up with these amazing, reminding questions. Questions that we know the answer to, but we choose to forget. He's definitely a God of mercy to put up with us. One consistent thread throughout humanity is that we tend to forget who God is and what He can do, so He graciously reminds us when we need it. So, if you find yourself worried about the election this year, you might end up hearing God ask questions like, "Am I still God? Am I not reigning over creation? Am I still the Alpha-Omega, beginning and end? Do I still hold the entire world in my hand, much less America?"

Songwriting::::REWARD
These posts on songwriting are not written from a professional point of view. These are just my thoughts as I experience new aspects of the craft. The best part of these posts will be your input.My favorite songs to write are congregational worship tunes. Writing songs for the church is something I am called by God to do. We're living in a time when writing worship songs is a very popular thing to do. With the huge success of the Passion movement alone, writing songs for the church has gone to a whole new level. Songwriters are coming out of the wood work with their latest modern worship song. The danger of all the success and any success is always pride. Motivation is a huge factor when it comes to this. I've felt the danger of pride as I've written songs. For a season, my motivation was centered around getting my songs heard and possibly getting signed. For me, that was a result of receiving a little recognition, and that recognition made my dream a possibility. One day, I read an article in Worship Leader Magazine by Matt Redman, which challenged me to rediscover the joy of simply writing for my local congregation and nothing more. It was then that I remembered the first time I saw our church worship with one of my songs. That was my motivation, and that article inspired me to regain that motivation and lose my pride. I still dream of seeing one of my songs go into churches all over and having a big impact, but the difference is that it is not my goal. It's fine to dream for those things, but our goals have to be on target. Writing songs for our local congregations is such an amazing thing for our church and for us. What a beautiful offering of our gifts, to simply serve the local flock that God is using us to minister to. I have a feeling that there may be too many talented worship leaders and songwriters who are thinking about record labels and radio as they write worship songs. My prayer for my songs is that they impact and minister to the crowd that God has put in front of me. If it goes beyond our church walls, then let that be God's will, and I'll give him all the praise for it. As I watch my local congregation connect to God through these words and melodies that I wrote, let that be my reward, and nothing else.
I just wrote a new song last week that captures that motivation, and I've gotten some good feedback on it. It's called "Offering to You".

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:
Jeremiah 13:1-7 ESV
1 Thus says the Lord to me, “Go and buy a linen loincloth and put it around your waist, and do not dip it in water.” 2 So I bought a loincloth according to the word of the Lord, and put it around my waist. 3 And the word of the Lord came to me a second time, 4 “Take the loincloth that you have bought, which is around your waist, and arise, go to the Euphrates and hide it there in a cleft of the rock.” 5 So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord commanded me. 6 And after many days the Lord said to me, “Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from there the loincloth that I commanded you to hide there.” 7 Then I went to the Euphrates, and dug, and I took the loincloth from the place where I had hidden it. And behold, the loincloth was spoiled; it was good for nothing.
In 2004, I was in Nashville getting our church praise team album mixed and mastered. Sometimes, when I drive and travel, I'll where my comfy adidas pants. When I packed for the trip, I neglected to pack my belt for my jeans that I would be wearing. The first morning, I woke up in the hotel room and discovered the missing item. I then went to a nearby K-mart and purchased the cheapest, skinniest, most 80ist looking belt I could find. Then, I went back to the hotel, grabbed my Bible, and went and had breakfast. In my reading that day, I started on this passage. I was reading the NIV, and it said "linen belt". This all happened in conjunction within about 30 minutes. God truly used that experience to show me this great passage. I never want to be considered useless, or good for nothing to God.

Microwave + Cell Phone

This morning, I get an email from a lady from my A/V team that states...
Hey Gary,
My granddaughter “MICROWAVED” my phone and I had to buy a new one. I lost all my numbers...I didn’t mind, I needed a new phone anyway…I couldn’t get mad at her, she is too cute…
Do you have any stories like this to share?

Worship Confessional 10.12.08
Hello all. I actually had my vocalists lead 2 of the songs of our set today. This is an exciting step for us, and something I would like to see more of. It's taken a while to put the core team together, but we now have the right people using their gifts, so I'm thrilled to step in the background more and more.

Iron Man
We finally rented and watched Iron Man last night. It's one of the best comic book movies since X-Men. A lot of cool effects and action. I really liked the story line. The fact that he made the weapons for us that ended up in enemy hands. Makes you wonder how much that actually happens. The story of Tony Stark was also very similar to Alfred Nobel, who created weapons before changing his legacy to that of peace. I think the main message of the movie was "Don't Waste Your Life", which was a key line in the whole change of mind of the main character. Oh, and Robert Downey Jr. has to be one of the best, if not best actors of his generation. I'm glad to see him getting a second wind in his career. Great movie!

Friends or Foes?
My kids seem to be playing together pretty good. We have an occasional issue, but for the most part, it's going well. Here's Josh and Jade playing catch:
How well do your kids get along?
How well do your kids get along?
Something I just read
I just read a blog post from one of my friends from high school. They have a beautiful daughter that has had a rough go at things in her health. Her name is Abbie Grace (pictured), and she's beautiful. You can go here to read more. At the top of their blog, it states: "All things created by God are perfect even if we don't see it that way. Abbie was created to be our "perfect" 1p36 gift! James 1:17 "Every good gift and perfect gift is from above." That should inspire all of us to worship. I always thank God for health. Not so much perfect health, but health in general. When we do anything at all, we should thank God for the ability to do it. Sure, there maybe some that can do more we can, and there are always some that can do less, no matter what your situation. We must be positive. There is so much negativity, and pessimism in our culture right now, and the election is helping anything. Our answer lies with and from God. May that statement never become cliche in our hearts. One of my favorite old songs is "The Sold Rock". It starts by saying, "My hope is built on nothing less that Jesus' blood and righteousness." We have a choice. We can look down or up. Jesus has given us a gift. We are free to live, love, and laugh, with the confidence in nothing less than the cross. Thanks Kim, for your attitude and spirit, and your example for your kids.

Here's the scripture that stuck this week:
Jeremiah 5:22 ESV
22 Do you not fear me? declares the Lord.
Do you not tremble before me?
I placed the sand as the boundary for the sea,
a perpetual barrier that it cannot pass;
though the waves toss, they cannot prevail;
though they roar, they cannot pass over it.
In 2006, I went boogey boarding in the Indiatlantic Ocean, just about 5 minutes from our church. Being an idiot, I did recognize the fact that the waves were crashing on shore, which at that time, was draped with broken sea shells. The wave took me like a big hand and dragged me across the shells. The right side of my back looked nasty. To this day, those that were there and myself, refer to it as the "Passion of the Christ Wound". When I came to shore with my bloody back, there was a kid near by and she screamed, so I knew it looked bad. I walked away from that experience respecting the power of the ocean. It is a mighty force of nature and an incredible creation of God. When I read this verse, I am in awe of God. He has bordered this powerful force with mere grains of sand. I love going to the beach and thinking about His creation, and I deeply love this verse. What a reminder of God's power.

First Trip to the Gym
I had my orientation tonight with the Exercise Specialist. Here's the first part of our conversation:Trainer: Why are you here?
Me: I want to get in shape.
Trainer: In what way?
Me: Well, I've done my share of cardio, so I'd really like to get into weight training. I've never done any weight training.
Trainer: Yeah, I can tell.
At least he was straight with me. Only direction is up.

Christian Chick Flick
Our small group went to go see the movie, "Fireproof" tonight. This is a Christian film by the "Facing the Giants" guys, so I definitely tried to check my critic's hat at the door. This was a film for Christians. It definitely had the Christianese going on, so I would be careful in choosing which unchurched friends and family I would take. The low point of the Christian culture invasion was the abrupt Chikfila meal into a serious scene. My critic's hat couldn't stay off for that one. Again, I did not go in expecting these guys to pull of a monumental film. I looked past the acting and production to the story. It's a lot like songwriting. A good critic can look past production value to identify a good song, so when you record a song, you want it to be the best production possible, so you can eliminate that distraction for the listeners. I think these guys did the best they could on a $500,000 budget. Kirk Cameron actually surprised me. He stood out as a man among boys when it came to the acting. Again, he was surrounded by some bad actors, so it was probably a challenge for him to keep his game up.Let me state the positives. The story line was good, with exception to some weak points in the script. These guys definitely have a gift to invision a solid story. Jesus was proclaimed, in a very churchy way, but He was proclaimed, none the less. I liked the fact that they pointed out that we can't base our marriage's future on a feeling, but on a commitment. They showed that husbands and wives grow closer to each other by growing closer to God together. The most positive thing I could say is that I left the theater wanting to be a better husband, so that's reason enough to see it.
The other stand out factor of this movie experience was all the women in the theater crying. There was a lot of tearful moments, but it ended with a very "chick flick ending". If you see it, you'll know what I'm talking about. This was definitely a Christian chick flick. If you're married, I would recommend this movie. It will inspire you to look at your marriage and want to make it the best it can be. I opened the car door for my wife in the parking lot, and I should do that more often.

I'm Not a Worship Leader in a Huge Church, and that's...OK
I'm a worship leader in a church that runs around 250-300 on a weekend. The average church in America runs around 80-100 on a weekend, last time I checked. That being said, we're above average. There are certainly bigger churches. We have Calvary Chapel, here in Melbourne, and they have about 7,000-8,000 on a weekend, from what I understand. I've had the pleasure of leading a service there, and it was great. Then, there are those that run anywhere from 500-3,000. As a worship leader for the last 6 and a half years, I can tell you that when you pack out a room, no matter what size, there's an immediate buzz that comes with the full house. It's really an amazing experience to lead worship in a packed house.
So, what about when the place is not full? As in our case, we just went through a 3-year transition of leadership, style, philosophy, and vision at Bethany. We lost a lot of people, because of the changes, and we've gained a lot of people who line up with what we're doing. So, really, God's rebuilding His church. Naturally, there are still a lot of open seats that are ever slowly being filled.
I once read something that Mike Pivalachi wrote about Matt Redman. He said that he's seen him lead worship for the masses and for a group of just 15 people, yet he still had the same intensity. That struck me and has stuck with me.
Can I be honest? There's "something" in me that desires to lead thousands of people in worship. I would not be so quick to say that every worship leader feels the same way, but I would assume that most do. That "something" in me can be good or it can be bad. The pride and arrogance in me would love to perform and be accepted by the masses. That's bad. That's not what God has called me to do. Praise of self is always pride. Praise of God is always humility. The desire to see the masses proclaim the name of Jesus, and the desire to see people connect to God and see Him alone is good. So, the "something" in me has to be from God, or else it could be from and for me.
Most worship leaders are not in huge churches. Most worship leaders do not have big budgets, paid sound team members, paid musicians, and some are not even paid themselves. So, I have to remember, as the song says, "There must be more than this...".
There is an intensity in our services as of late. The Holy Spirit is moving in our church. People are discovering God for the first time, and they've been in church all of their lives. People are being inspired by our services, and it's the first time they've even been to a church. I love leading worship at our church, and there are many open seats. Do I want to see a full house? Of course, but that cannot be the source of my joy. Jack Hayford has said that God's presence is manifested in the praise of His people. The Bible says that where two or more are gathered, He is there. God is my joy, and showing Him to 2, 3, or 300 people is my mission every week. I'm not a worship leader in a huge church, and that's...OK.

Family Super Walk
For the second time this week, we went on our "Family Super Walk". We're walking from our house to Subway, which is 3 miles away, and back. So, we're getting a nice 6 mile walk. We do all this by while taking turns pushing a double stroller with our kids. This has proved to make it a bit of a challenge. It's actually been fun, and a great way to get out of the house. Our goal is to get into our desired shape by next summer...so we shall walk.

Word Wednesday .::13
Word Wednesday is posted every Wednesday. Each week I post a scripture that I've read that week that has spoken to me in a fresh way. I believe that if we read God's Word every day, He will give us at least one scripture every week that will impact us. My hope is to see others comment and share a scripture that they have read.Here's the scripture that stuck this week:
Isaiah 66:1-2 ESV
1Thus says the Lord: “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; what is the house that you would build for me, and what is the place of my rest?
2 All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the Lord. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.
Even the temple was inadequate to hold the presence of God. He's just to big to be put in a box, no matter how hard we try. Why would I ever even attempt to confine the presence of God to any place? One controversy that plagued me for several years, was dress. When I started dressing more like myself in the church setting, it ruffled some feathers. People would argue that I should dress my best for God. I pray and hope that those people did not have encounters with God exclusively in a church building. I have often asked, doesn't God see us in our PJ's? This post is not about dress. It's about how big and amazing God is. No matter what we build, or how we look or sound, God is only interested in our humble spirit and the condition of our heart and mind. Nice buildings and dapper threads will all fade away, but our worship and service to God has eternal value. Is there anything wrong with nice buildings and nice clothes? No....unless it leads to us neglecting what's on the inside. May we all strive for a humble spirit this week, and may we all tremble in awe at God's Word, which is such an amazing gift to us.
