Peanut Butter Perfection

That's not only the name of the ice cream I had tonight, it's also the taste of it. I would agree with the comments on the Question post. Cold Stone is definitely the place to go for some yum ice cream. Our friend Heidi was in town, so we took her to Moe's for some good supper, and then followed it up with some ice cream. I've got to start getting healthy again soon.

Word Wednesday .::4

Word Wednesday is posted every Wednesday. Each week I post a scripture that I've read that week that has spoken to me in a fresh way. I believe that if we read God's Word every day, He will give us at least one scripture every week that will impact us. My hope is to see others comment and share a scripture that they have read.

This week a passage stuck out to me and challenged me. Here it is:

Psalm 109:1-4 (ESV)

1 Be not silent, O God of my praise!
2 For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me, speaking against me with lying tongues.
3
They encircle me with words of hate, and attack me without cause.
4
In return for my love they accuse me, but I give myself to prayer.

I don't feel like I have a bunch of enemies or people accusing me of stuff, I have in the past, and it sucks. It's tough, and honestly, I have handled those situations sometimes good, and sometimes not so good. Verse 4 says, "...but I give myself to prayer." Wow... that really hit me. The Bible is the greatest source of truth we have. It just exudes statements of truth like this one. The times that I have had to deal with attacks or accusations always have hinged on whether or not I have given myself to prayer in those situations. In other versions, it translates to even pray for the accusers and persecutors. That's tough and very unnatural for me. It really takes a holy desire to get to that point, and the only way to get there is through prayer. For most of my life, I was taught to read the Bible, read the Bible, evangelize, go to church, and read the Bible. I was taught this by people of great intentions, but they missed and I missed a very key ingredient: prayer. Once I finally started an open and honest communication with God, I really started growing closer to His will. It's funny how our reactions change in a holy way when we just pause...selah...and ask God. My life's regrets and guilts minimize with prayer.

Marbel Slab or Cold Stone?

We had debates over this today, and I'd love to hear what others prefer.

Big Snake

Healer

I had a personal time of worship today on youtube. I just finished my bible reading this morning in the Psalms, and I saw this on Ragamuffinsoul. I have been looking at this song for a couple of weeks, but it finally grabbed me after watching these videos. I just had to share this. It is so powerful. I hope it brings you closer to God like it has me this morning. I would watch the first one before the second one, so you can really understand the story behind the song.

Worship Confessional 07.27.08

Every worship leader who leads with a guitar has at least commonality. We all have broken a string while leading worship. It's a weird situation, because you are thinking different things, like "I need to find a second to tune my other 5 strings." Today that happened to me at the end of the first song. Obviously, I should have changed my strings this week, because I had used it a lot more than I thought the last couple of weeks. When I first started leading worship, I led without an instrument a lot, but I haven't done that for 4-5 years. I decided to do that today to keep somewhat of a flow in the worship. Long story short, it turned out to be a really cool and fresh thing, and I felt a lot of freedom. Our church really engaged with the songs, and I could feel their hearts as they sang this morning. Today's focus was patience, so I ended the set by singing "Everlasting God" and our pastor ended his sermon by quoting the scripture in Isaiah, "Strength will rise..." He then called me up to sing the song again at the end of the sermon. It was a really nice way to close out the sermon. Here was the set list:

"Everything Glorious"-Crowder
"How Great is our God"-Tomlin
"How Great Thou Art"-HYMN
"Everlasting God"-Brown

Strap Sweat

Some great students from our college class at church and Jennifer and I went to Universal Studios today. We had a lot of fun. Here's a couple pics.

It was fun, but it was really, really hot and crowded. We waited in line for the new Simpsons ride for 90 minutes-that's an hour and a half by my math, and we all agreed it wasn't worth the wait, and for that matter, no ride is worth an hour and a half wait. After this long, heated wait in line I think I discovered a new type of sweat line. I call it the "strap sweat". Only pictures could describe this phenomenon. Here you go...

before

afterWe also discovered the "Child Swap" area on the rides. If you have a young child that can't ride, you can have one person from your party wait next to the line with the child, and when your party comes back from the ride, you can swap out one person to watch the child, and then you and your party can get right back on the ride. Your friends will love you for it.

New Song on CCLI TV

They just posted one of my new songs this week. It's called "May Your Kingdom Come". It's been a great song for our church this year, as we've developed more of a heart for the homeless and needy. Click here to check it out.

Pics

Here's some pics from the photo shoots on vacation. Major props to Mikey. Thanks man.

Vacation Last Day

Well, it's Wednesday night, and I'm finally posting about our last day of vacation, which was basically Monday. We had a great day. We went to Spanky's, for the third time (I hope Jen got her fill of Spanky's). Then we went bowling. It was great fun. I then got the opportunity to have a photo shoot with Mikey. It was a blessing to get some quality photos for any press stuff I do for my music, which I have badly needed. Vacation is over, and we are trying to get back in the groove of things, and back to reality. It was fun while it lasted. Here's a little video. Enjoy:

I believe that if we read God's Word every day, He will give us at least one scripture every week that will impact us. My hope is to see others comment and share a scripture that they have read.

Right now, I'm in the Psalms, which is great stuff for a worship leader. I've read several really cool verses, but the scripture that has stuck out to me the most this week is:

Psalm 92:12-15 ESV

12
The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

13 They are planted in the house of the Lord; they flourish in the courts of our God.

14
They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green,

15
to declare that the Lord is upright; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

We're going through a series at our church about the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians. When I read this, verse 14 popped out at me, especially the line "They still bear fruit in old age...". Am I bearing fruit right now? That's the question I need to ask myself everyday until I die. Then verse 15 explains why we live righteously, "to declare that the Lord is upright...". It all comes back to worship and giving God glory. I keep finding that reason throughout scripture. I've got to live right to show off my God and not myself.

Vacation Day 6

Today is Sunday, so we went to church. We went to Bible Baptist Church in Savannah, GA. My dad is the Music of Minister there. It was a great time. I did some praise team vocals and guitar for a couple of the worship songs, and I sang "Restore to Me" by Mac Powell right before the sermon. It's a scripture song taken directly from Psalm 51:9-13, so I had them put the scripture on the screen. We took communion, and it was great seeing the faithful people and meeting some new people. Then we took my parents out to eat for their wedding anniversary, and came home for a nice nap. It's been a great day, and we're going to enjoy the rest of the night just hanging out.

Vacation Day 5

Today was family picture day. These can be brutal, but it went really well, and we're excited see how they came out. We had two really talented photographers, Mikey Edde and Jason Scroggins
and they took about 400 shots from what I understand. We can't wait to see them. After that we had some lunch at Jennifer's favorite, Spanky's, a-gain, which was delicious. Then, at 3:45pm, we were in a jam-packed theater watching the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight. Man, what a great flick. It's hard to figure out the greatness of Heath Ledger's performance, because of his death. I really think he would be getting the same acclaim, even if he was still alive. We truly have lost an amazing talent. The movie was 2 and a half hours, and it flew by. I would say that's definitely a mark of a great movie. It's definitely a huge departure from Jack Nicholson's portrayal of the Joker. It's definitely a very dark movie, but really, really well done. Now we're home for the night, just chilling at the house. I'll be posting some of the pics soon I'm sure.

More to come tomorrow...

Equipping the Next Generation

After my gas & guns blog the other day, this kills me (no pun). A Baptist church is giving away a gun to a lucky student as a way of building attendance at their youth rally. The gun, from what the article stated, is an AR15 assault rifle, which I have pictured here. I normally don't like to criticize, but again I just blogged about guns and I ran across this. Suddenly, swallowing gold fish and giving away cars doesn't seem so bad anymore thanks to these guys.

Vacation Day 4

I slept in today again. It was great. I've been loving going to bed with out setting my alarm on my phone. We started off the day by making a Target run. We love some Target. When we dated, we used to go to Target when were bored. I can't remember the last time we were bored. Then we went to a great Mexican restaurant called Jalapenos for lunch. I love living in Melbourne, but there's not a real, real great Mexican restaurant there. Savannah has a plethora of them, and I think Jalapenos is my favorite. After that, my Dad, and Jennifer and I went to an outlet mall. I don't know why, but I cannot stand outlet malls. I dread going to them. Maybe cause they're spread out. It just seems endless. It exhausts me. Anywho, after that I went on a daily walk with my Dad and then the whole gang got together and went to Larry's Giant Subs. This is one of me and Jennifer's favorite sub places.

Here's some pics from Larry's:
That's my Mom.

Vacation Day 3

Great day today. I got to sleep in and just chill in the morning. At lunch time I took the family for a little get away. We went to Jennifer's favorite restaurant in Savannah called Spanky's. They have amazing fried chicken fingers, spuds, and hot cheese bread. We then went to the mall for some shopping and let josh play in the play area with all the kids. I then went on a long walk with my Dad, which we do every day I'm here, and tonight my mom fixed hamburgers, hot dogs, and sweet potatoe fries. Basically, when we get back home, Gary's gonna have to get healthy again, and drop some weight. We're having a blast. Here's some pics and a little video of our lunch trip.

Watch the guy trying to pray...

...there's no audio, and how I wish there was.

CSI Spoof Sermon Video

This is a contribution to Creative Chaos//19 over at Ragamuffinsoul.

We are in the midst of a sermon series called "CSI:Christian Scene Investigation". It's a series about the fruit of the Spirit. To enhance the sermons, we did a video series that kind of spoofs the CSI shows as they discover a new fruit every week. Here's one of the videos:

Vacation Day 2

Today was our first day in Savannah, GA. We got here this afternoon, and we went to Selah tonight. Selah is a singles ministry at my Dad's church. They're doing great things, and they've got a great thing going on Wednesday nights. It was extra cool cause my little bro spoke tonight. He spoke about worship, which can be a pretty broad subject, but he did a swell job at making a simple point. Worship is in everything, not just music. We then came home and had home made pizza. I had chicken and broccoli pizza for the first time. It was pretty good. I'm looking forward to a good night's sleep, and I have nothing planned tomorrow. Vacation is sweet. More to come tomorrow.

Right now, I'm in the Psalms, which is great stuff for a worship leader. I've read several really cool verses, but the scripture that has stuck out to me the most this week is:

Psalm 67:1-2 ESV
1. May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, Selah
2.
that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations.

This is a prayer for God's kindness and blessing in our life, which I've prayed too many times to count, but this one is different than what I usually pray. In verse 2 it shows the reason and motive for the prayer. "That your way may be known on earth". Wow! This scripture has given me a new way to pray. Even as God blesses my life, I should want it for God's glory and not my own. That's really easy to say, but not so easy to pray.

Children's Books

Maybe the artists of the books write the stories real quick before they're published.

Vacation Day 1

I am officially on vacation. I'm in Jacksonville, FL tonight at my in-laws house, then on my way to Savannah, GA for a week with my folks. We rented a car for the week. We got a Chevy Impala. I'm enjoying driving it, and it gets good gas mileage. We used barely a quarter of a tank of gas to get to Jacksonville. This has got to be my most thrilling post yet...or not. More to come tomorrow.

My Weekend

I had a fun weekend. My brother and his wife came down to celebrate their one year wedding anniversary. We went to Universal Studios on Friday, which is the Durb's favorite hangout in Orlando. We had the special privilege of seeing Brandon Fraser in person. He was there promoting the Mummy 3, which looks awesome. We got to see a bunch of previews and sneak peeks of the film. They took us back to a private studio building that free Cokes and water, and a bunch of those Egyptians on stilts walking around scaring my son half to death. Here's some pics:

Then, on Saturday we all went to the mall for some shopping and lunch. While we were there my sister-in-law and my wife got the crazy idea to get Jade's ears pierced. I decided not to witness any of it and took Josh to the play area until it was over. My brother gladly took pictures of the event and it was very sad, but I'm glad it's done. Here's a few pics:

On Sunday, we had church, and I mowed the lawn on Sunday afternoon. After we all were up from naps, we decided to go on a walk, which for me, means the snuggly. The pic below says it all:

It was a great, family, fun, griswold weekend.

Worship Confessional 07.13.08

Don't you love it when the sound system wigs out? It's so awesome. I've been around church music world my whole life, and I've heard the statement "there's demons in the sound board" about a million times, but today I think God did it. We're in the middle of a series called "CSI", and we're studying the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians. Today's fruit was joy. I'm not saying I know God messed with the sound, but it's a theory. I was very preachy today, reminding my team that we need to have genuine joy, as we lead God's people in worship. As I was leading worship, low and behold, my monitors went out completely, which is like pushing mute on the stage. I freaked for a second, and did my usual trouble shooting by looking at the sound man with a weird face, then I looked at the people to see if there was anything happening with the house speakers. When I looked out, I saw people worshiping God passionately with excitement, God showed me that He was still the center, even if Gary couldn't hear himself. I found my joy again, and finished the set, which was one of the best this year. It's just a theory. Hopefully it was just a glitch. We'll find out tomorrow night at practice.

Here was our set list:
-"O Happy Day"-old gospel tune
-"Happy Day"-Tim Hughes
-"Let it Rise"-Maranatha
-"Holy is the Lord"-Chris Tomlin
-"Joy"-Tree63

We surprised our crowd by starting with the old gospel song, "O Happy Day" to intro "Happy Day" by Tim Hughes. I saw Chris Tomlin do this on YouTube. It actually was pretty cool. I put a clip at the bottom of the post. I also went from "Let it Rise" to the line "...and it's rising up all around..." in Tomlin's "Holy is the Lord". It was a really great transition.

Gas & Guns

So, I went to gas up my car today, and I happened to be in a "rough" area of town, and I got a taste of reality. I had my son with me in the car, and as I was finishing and getting in the car, I noticed a couple of guys and girls yelling at each other, and it was escalating. Next thing I know, one guy reaches in his car and points a towel at the other guy's face. The other guy backed away quickly. Now, either this guy had a certain linen allergy, or there was a gun under the towel. I started making my way out of there quickly, because it was way too intense. I looked back at my son, and he said, "those boys were yelling at each other", and I said "yeah, those are bad boys." I was frightened at the thought of the potential violence in front of me. My first thought was to get out of there, because I could just imagine a stray bullet killing my son or myself. What an awful thought, but that's the kind of stuff that people face on a daily basis in a lot of inner cities across the land of the free. With all of the debates over guns, and the Supreme Court decision, one thing that cannot be debated is that America has a problem. We are littered with gun violence. I'm not going to be against someone owning a gun in general. It's our constitutional right, and I'll support that, but I hate guns. Some people believe that if everyone owned a gun, there would be less violence, but I don't want one. They scare the crap out of me. I always tell people that I will never own a pet that could physically kill me, and that fuels my fear of guns in my house. Again, I'm not against people owning guns. I respect their decision, and there are a lot of people who have the know-how and skill and common sense that it takes to take on that responsibility. What I saw this morning is what scares me, but freedom has a cost. When you give everyone freedom, you're going to have people who will abuse that freedom. I can think of a couple of movies that show the ease of killing that guns have brought to our world. Indiana Jones takes out a gun to end a potential sword fight before it started. The machine gun mowed down the honor of the samurai sword in "The Last Samurai". Guns can kill with ease, and actually the only purpose a gun has is to hurt, harm and kill. Not very positive, and it makes me wonder what our world would be like if Rodger Bacon never invented gun powder in 1249 and the first gun wasn't invented in China in 1250 (I googled it).

Word Wednesday .::1

So, I am a huge proponent of daily Bible reading. God's Word is powerful and life=changing, and we've got to take advantage of it. It can be a lifeline for us. Whenever I teach about this, I always say that if you read the Bible everyday, you should have at least one scripture or verse a week that sticks out and sticks in your heart. So, I thought I would bring this idea to my blog world. Every Wednesday, I'm going to post scripture(s) that has helped me, and I hope it encourages whoever reads this. If you read my blog regularly at all, I'd love to hear from you every week what scripture has helped you. I give you "Word Wednesday".

Right now I'm in the Psalms, and as a worship leader, it's like an amusement park of scriptures. It's been said that the Psalms is the text book for worship leaders. I ran across a scripture that I just can't get past. I wrote a song using it. I'm not sure if the song is a keeper or not, the scripture is awesome. It is Psalms 43:3, "Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling!"

After reading this, I really meditated on how God sends His light and truth to me, and the fact that if I pursue truth and be in His light, they will bring me into His life-altering presence.

What's your Word?

Gig

I played a gig tonight. I'm not a gig playing type, but it was fun. I was invited to a cool new restaurant called Squidlips. They have a Christian music night on Tuesdays, so they gave me a call a couple of weeks ago, and asked me to fill a date. I took my bass player and my drummer and we tore it up for about an hour and a half. We played some of my stuff and a lot of worship songs we do at our church. I actually announced that we were going to be there last Sunday morning at church, and about 50 people from our church showed up tonight. It was cool for a couple of reasons. It was cool because they were showing me support and, in a way, showing me some love. It was cool because it turned into an imprompt to church event, and it was an awesome night of community and togetherness for our church, not to mention an outreach opportunity. Someone told me that for most of the night, our you could see people mouthing the words to the songs. On a side note, I broke a string with 5 songs left, so I played the rest of the night out with 5 strings, which was a little frustrating, but it turned out to be a great night. Here's some pics:

the Fourth

I'm finally getting around to recapping our fourth of July. We pretty much chilled most of the day at the house, but when evening came...we played with fire...

...family pose in front of the fire...

...the kids are in awe of the fire...

...and here's me running away like a coward after lighting one...

...hope you had a great holiday weekend.

Worship Confessional 07.06.08

We had a really cool day. Pastors and worship leaders understand me when I say, it flowed. I'm not really talking about performance, but more about worship. The worship flowed. When you have announcements, announcement videos, offering, sermon videos, and music, there can be speed bumps sometimes where you get distracted momentarily. Today, we really didn't have any speed bumps, and I think I know why. My pastor, the student pastor, and myself pray every Sunday morning before the service, and felt compelled to pray something. I prayed that we would leave our worries about the flow out of the sanctuary, and let God move among us. I believe that God provided a seamless flow of worship in our service. It's amazing what happens when we practice what we preach.
Today, we focused on the first fruit of the Spirit, LOVE. We're calling the series CSI: Christian Scene investigation. We decided to have fun with it, and create a series of spoof videos of the show CSI, and we're using it to emphasize each fruit. I think it was received well. I'll be posting the video this week, so you can watch it.
We also introduced a couple of songs to the church.

Here's the set list:
"Our Love is Loud"-David Crowder Band
"I Love You, Lord"-new arrangement
"If I Have Not Love"-Matt Redman
"Joy"-Tree63

The worship set was really energetic. The songs really provided an intimate setting to sing songs of love to our God. It was an all around positive experience today.

Song of the Month

I've had another song picked for song of the month at Worshipsource.com. They picked "Holy Reign" for the month of July, so people will get to hear it for the next month. I am honored that God continues to use these little songs outside of our church.

I'm fried

Today, I filmed for 3 hours straight. Not because it was adlibbed or messing around. We had a script, a plan, props, lighting, and a camera. We're doing a new sermon series at our church called "CSI". It's about the fruit of the Spirit. We're doing a little spoof video series on the CSI shows investigating the fruit of the Spirit. This is a 9-week series, and we're showing a new video before each sermon, so we shot everything today. It took a while, but we had fun, and got everything shot, except for one more segment, which we have time to shoot. The actors and myself have a new appreciation for people who do this kind of work day-in and day-out. We were definitely fried by the end. I think it turned out great. We actually did some lighting, so this should make for some great-looking footage. Editing starts tomorrow. That's the funnest part for me.
